Dining-Out Extravaganza

A Dining-Out Extravaganza, sponsored by the Highlands Educational Literacy Program, Inc. as a fundraiser, was very successful. Raffle Tickets were sold for prizes from businesses at the Exit 7 shopping area. HELP would like to express its appreciation to all who participated.

The winner of the raffle was Chief Richard of the Southeast Culinary School of Bristol.
 

Kay Ogle, of the Meadowview Health Clinic, and Sallie Garrett/Executive Director of the HELP Literacy Program, drew the name for the raffle.

 
Alpha Natural Resources Donates to the
Highlands Educational Literacy Program, Inc.
 
 
Kevin Stanley and Whitney Rosenbaum of the Alpha Natural Resources presented a $5,000.00 check to the Highlands Educational Literacy Program, Inc. at the Abingdon Child Development Center on Friday, April 23, 2010.  The ceremony took place during a book distribution to the center by HELP.
 
Christy Hicks, Chairperson of the Board of Directors for HELP, accepted the check.  Mavis and Melessa from the Southeast Culinary School of Bristol were on hand to read to the kids.
 
  

Congratulations to Fishing Rodeo Winners 

The Highlands Educational Literacy Program, Inc. sponsored its Second Fishing Rodeo at the Southwest VA 4-H Center on Saturday, May 22. There were approximately 20 children participating. 

Prizes were awarded according to age groups: 5 years and below, 6-8 year olds and 9-12 year olds.

The first place winner for the 5 and under age group was Cameron Lester, in the 6-8 year old group Addison Smith, won for her age group and the first fish caught, and the 9-12 year old winner was Peyton Hurd, Tyler Jackson won a $50.00 Savings Bond for the last fish caught.

HELP appreciates the in-kind donations to make this even a success; Southwest VA 4-H Center, Food City, and the VA Inland Fisheries. The media and organizations who sent out e-mail promotions contributed to the advertising of the event. The HELP Literacy Program would like to thank all of our supporters.
